Amy is one of my parents very best friends from high school. I’m not writing this review because of it but I thought it was important to mention it. I finally finished reading this book after months of trying to throughout my dads recent hospitalizations. I can tell you it was just what I needed. This book is for all ages and it pulled at every heart string my body owns. This is great for anyone who has or had a family member struggling with addiction. My sister who will be 30 in December, is 8 months sober and this book is dead on with how it effects the family. Everything was literally spot on and so relatable in so many ways. It’s a must read feel good kinda book. I’ve watched Amy through the entire process of writing this book and I could not be prouder of her. I’m grateful for her friendship with my parents because real friends are hard to keep these days. The book shares so much on what real friends do for one another and it has such an example of how we should really be there for our friends in their times of need. So in honor of her great example of friendship, I thought there would be nothing better than showing her my support on what an awesome job she did writing this book. Amy you rocked it! Buy this book, you’ll be glad ya did.

Amy Voltaire did an excellent job depicting the devastating effects an addict has on a child. This story is an eye opener in understanding an addicts experience and the pain it causes to everyone involved in their life. This is a fantastic read that grasps the emotional situations addicts portray on the world around them

This is a well-crafted novel and one you don't want to put down. I wish this book would have existed when I was young. It would have been helpful to know there were others like me, who had parents who suffered from addictions. I'm hoping kids who are affected by the opioid crisis find this gem of a book. Kudos to the author and it feels like the main character, Erin, has more of a story to tell.

Erin’s mother abandoned her when she was five years old, so Erin has lived with her grandparents the majority of her life. She's always had trouble making friends due to her defensive and sometimes hateful nature, but this year she makes a new friend, Grace. They have sleepovers, eat pizza, and talk about boys, but Erin is plagued by her past, especially when it shows up in random places. Is Erin’s mother willing to give up drugs for her? Will her mother be able to stay clean? How much will it hurt if Erin tries to accept her mother back into her life? Will it hurt even more if she doesn’t?Opinion:The main characters are particularly well developed, and the reader gets better acquainted with the secondary characters as the story progresses, but I feel the narrative definitely could have shown more of the characters' inner struggles. This could be good for younger readers, but mature young adults might find it lacks the complexity of thought and confusion that often plagues a teenager's mind when struggling with major family and friend conflicts. Books allow authors to pour immense creativity into them so all five senses can be explored in quite a lot of detail, and I picked up on very little sensory and imagery beyond insertion of basic adjectives. In contrast, this felt more like I was reading a "movie." The novel, however, does a great job of focusing on Erin’s doubts about her mother, giving it an “I, too, understand how it is” element. It would be great to have seen more of that emotional depth throughout the plot line.

At five years old, Erin was given a bitter dose of reality when her mother disappeared, leaving her to fend for herself. Luckily, her father’s grandparents stepped in to take her in. Coming to terms with what her mother did hasn’t been easy. Neither has understanding her reason for leaving. Erin doesn’t quite get why her drug-addicted mother made the choices she did, but as she grows up and finds her place in the world, she finds herself trying to find answers and make herself a better person in the process.This is a book that will definitely send you on a rollercoaster of laughs, ugly cries, and suspense. I really liked Erin, and I found that her character was relatable. She had a lot of faults, but I loved that throughout the story, she realized those faults and devouted time to working on them, trying to be the best version of herself that she could be. Her flipflopping emotions about her mother were also very realistic to me.Another aspect I enjoyed was the relationships between the characters. This felt like it was written about real people. I especially enjoyed the joking interactions between Erin and Grace. None of the characters in this story are exactly perfect, but I loved the way it showed that everyone has their strengths and their faults.A fantastic literary journey.Also, narration was fantastic for the part.This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
