Borne as much out of frustration as perception, the initial chapters catalog the current fixation with "innovation theatre", activities focusing on the appearance instead of longer-term benefits, and the usual suspects like Apple and Tesla. Anyone that has worked in a large company will be alternatively cringing and nodding.Once it gets that off its chest, the book relaxes more into examining what works, what does not and avoiding common mistakes. It is similar to returning to the principles of “Agile”, “Lean” and similar methodologies instead of the distractions of detailed processes.Worth a read by anyone interested in innovation or dissuaded by innovation for innovation’s sake.

Alf Rehn does an excellent job of exposing how the vast quantities of writing on innovation and the big business that is innovation consulting are just plain useless, or use-little at best. This should be required reading for anyone planning to write yet another innovation book or run yet another innovation/lean/business model canvas/design thinking workshop.Alas, after the cringe-inspiring beginning of the book, the author moves on to well-trodden paths of HR recommendations. There is nothing wrong with these, but I was hoping for something - dare I say it - more innovative.

When I hear the word "Innovation" I feel the need to start shouting and run for the hill as it's an abused term and it usually means that something will soon me complicated and not user friendly.This book helped to make peace with the term as it's full of common sense and interesting ideas.I think it's one of the best I read about this topic.Highly recommended!Many thanks to Kogan Page and Netgalley for this ARC

In his new book “Innovation for the Fatigued” author and professor Alf Rehn, to paraphrase William Shakespeare, comes to bury innovation management and its cheerleaders, not to praise it. Innovation fatigue is the result of everyone at work who’s sat through talks, taken part in initiatives, or in general has experienced “innovation” work that has primarily revolved around buzz words and empty concepts. The antidote, according to Rehn, is not yet another innovation model or process. Instead it means digging into the messy work of people and those human needs and relationships we require to do exceptional work or even the impossible.When I read “Innovation for the Fatigued” I felt something I wasn’t expecting from yet another business book: inspiration. It reminded me of the feeling I had when I read Guy Kawasaki’s “Rules for Revolutionaries” or Seth Godin’s “Purple Cow” years ago. These authors enlighten and refresh due to their willingness, no eagerness, to call out the emptiness of standard ways of working. Both of those books propelled me forward in good directions. I feel the same way after reading Rehn’s book.Roger Martin defined innovation as “customer-driven, providing a new product or process that adds value to somebody’s life.” Alf Rehn’s Innovation for the Fatigued provides us with inspiration and direction on how to get there, in a very human, sometimes messy, but ultimately necessary way.If you’re looking for some innovation inspiration, buy and read the book.

So I've just read the best book on innovation, ever actually.Among the throws of shallow "fail fast", "be lean" and "think outside of the box" *gag*......Alf Rehn declares war on shallow innovation and provides framework for how to actually build the mythical innovation culture, consisting of no nonsense practical tips, like the powers of pointing vs yawning or what kind of diversity is important. And it's going to be hard work, but Alf probably puts it best himself:As innovation fatigue reaches epidemic levels, we have become less and less adept at reflecting on what innovation means, how we can compare different forms of innovation and what we should do when people start showing signs of innovation stress. Cultures of deep innovation do not just ‘do innovation’, but continuously challenge and question it. By doing so, they ensure that the organization keeps learning and developing, rather than getting caught up in shallow innovation games.
