It is a story of the changing business landscape in India as it shook off the shackles of a restricted economy and it moved, unfettered into the internet era. It is a story of a dear friend, as he transcended bias and rejection, and used his wits and business acumen to carve out his own place in the annals of Indian entrepreneurship.The book triggered memories as I recalled snippets of so many conversations I have had with Alok sprinkled over the past few decades. Alok has weaved an inspiring narrative, connecting the dots, learning from his experiences, and sharing it eloquently and succinctly to create a shared learning experience for all.Alok’s book is exactly like him – irrepressible! It conveys his passion for excellence, his unbridled enthusiasm to innovate, and his tremendous tenacity and fortitude. I found this book excellent from two different perspectives. First, it is well written. It flows easily from personal story to lessons as Alok traces his entrepreneurial journey. Second, the insights and wisdom shared are extremely relatable to fellow entrepreneurs. Alok does not shrink from presenting examples where he did poorly and what he learned. For example, he shares the story of how we met the CEO of a potential acquirer who was unimpressed with the answer Alok gave to his vision for the company. "It's a passion project," the CEO declared declining to proceed further. Alok, though shaken by this abrupt talked about his learnings, from this incident.The book is filled with good lessons for what makes good ideas blossom into good businesses. That perseverance is key. That all that glitters may not be gold. He is ejected from his own company and though dejected it turns out to be the best thing that happened to him both because he stumbled onto the best idea (games2win) but also because his previous company faces unexpected headwinds.The discussion on sales, on negotiations and on being relentless in closing deals is a masterclass that all entrepreneurs need to heed. He tells the story of how when investors turned down his request for additional financing at the onset of the crash following the dot-com collapse, he is contemplating downsizing his team to weather the storm when his colleague tells him that they should look to grow their revenue. One month of relentless calling and closing got them on a track to weather the storm and become profitable ever since!It closes with this gem that Alok got from his father who observed when Alok broke the news that he wanted to step away from the family business (socks, hence the name of the book) and start his own business (contests2win). His dad listened and then observed "everything starts small." That this obvious piece of advice is non-obvious is illustrated by the number of companies that grow too fast and then fall apart!Great book. Great read.
I am familiar with Alok's posts and his blog `The Rodinhoods', so I had come across several of the stories in this book. Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed the writing style, authenticity and the author's passion for the subject. Unlike textbooks, this one is written by a successful (more than once) entrepreneur, who does not preach, but shares his own story and the learning he derived from it. Each chapter is really a continuation of his journey as an entrepreneur and blends seamlessly with the next. In a world where startup success is measured by valuation, or how many customers have tried your service for free, Alok's story is a timely reminder that the basics matter - get into detail, know every part of the business, sell sell sell.... A must read for every would be entrepreneur, B school student or just anyone who wants to learn about how to really do business.
This is a great book. Especially the way it is written. The stories make you go through the tough journey that is there for the entrepreneurs. I liked that there was no preaching in the stories. Although to be honest the reflection after the stories are great to read but a bit too polished positively at times.Still some of the reflections or learnings did inspire me.Since we are humans I guess there must be some other side of the coin. Nonetheless a very good book for anyone who wants to read about successes and learn from others.I would recommend this highly. All the best to Mr. Kejriwal. Thanks for writing this.
This is a book for you if you like reading stories about those who made it to the top via their hard work, blood, sweat, and tears.This is not the book for you if you were looking for something more in-tune with the "self-help" genre.
