Read Online and Download Westwood Monster Patrol by Andrea Beatriz Arango. What would YOU do if you found a dismembered hand in the woods behind your house? Ash, Talib, Josefina, Marimar, and Alejandro are pretty used to the not-so-great aspects of life at the Westwood Trailer Park. What they’re not used to is having dead bodies pop up so close to home. Although they’re each dealing with their own complicated problems, they put these aside in order to track down a grisly killer. As the teens delve deeper into a world of haunting visions, bibliomancy, poke tattoos, and even a demon, they are forced to contend with a reality that may be a bit wilder than they anticipated. When one of their own is taken, will they manage to pull together their makeshift crime team and save the day?

Westwood Monster Patrol by Andrea Beatriz Arango Review

Westwood Monster Patrol is a short and sweet novella where a group of five misfits become friends and team up to take down a really gross monster. Like a good Stephen King book, this quintet of teenagers utilize a mix of logical detective work and mysterious supernatural powers to solve a mystery. What makes the book really shine, though, are the kids' personalities. It could have been really depressing (you're going to find a lot of broken homes in this trailer park), but the book keeps things perky with snappy dialogue, unyielding optimism, and good old fashioned teenage melodrama. It begins with a cold open that had me checking the book cover several times to make sure I was reading the right book (its violence and taut, serious tone betray the summer-vacation vibe in the illustrated group photo of Jo, Mari, Ash, Talib, and Ale), but golly, it was well written. The story soon turns to the titular Westwood Mobile Home park, and while the tone changes for a long stretch, it keeps a brisk pace that introduces the main characters and sets up realistic, believable situations for each of them to meet and become fast friends. There are two things I especially enjoyed in WMP. The first is the powers several of the teens discover. While clairvoyant dreams seem like something right out of the Stephen King playbook, others are way out of left field and super creative. More importantly, though, these powers are used intelligently and effectively, as if they're standard, everyday tools. My second favorite thing was the dialogue. These kids are whip-smart and witty whether they're playfully putting each other down, making smart movie references or mercifully making the reader feel old and decrepit with comments like:“Then let’s start with his social media. I mean, he was what, in his thirties? He must have been on Facebook. All the old people are.”(It is accurate, however; social media that is not Facebook scares me.)Each of the five main characters has their own set of lingo that they use, enriching their personalities and making them all so, so, so likable. I laughed out loud several times.Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, quick read in an underrepresented setting. Some observations:• These are kids. While I remember my teenage years vividly and know that I was crude, it was still uncomfortable to read about theses 15-year-old kids talk so cynically and crudely about sex. I realize of course, that this is probably just an intended-audience type of issue and not an issue with the book.• One of the characters, Ash, goes by the pronouns they/them. While this is an integral plot point and a fascinating part of the book, I can't deny that it was genuinely confusing at times. It often read like Ash was there with someone else (often because a moment before, they weren't alone), and they were both doing things together. As a result, I had to re-read several passages to realize that they were no longer with Jo.• The language used is one of my favorite parts of the book and the copy editing on display here is particularly impressive, but I struggled with spoken dialogue that included terms like lol, idk, af, and etc. And I mean, look, I'm not stupid--I know the kids aren't not verbalizing these terms as Lole, Id-ka, aff, and etts, but it had me wondering exactly how they *did* verbalize these terms. It seemed uncharacteristically casual and bloggy to see things like that. Granted, from another point of view, I won't deny it was charming.• Despite the aforementioned impressive copy editing, there are some typos. Many of them do not matter (a missing space here, an errant comma there), but some of them do: Ash is referred to on two occasions as a he, which I'm assuming got missed because one of the male characters is named Ale, so it blended in.

One of my favorite books I've read this year (out of 32 so far!) The characters felt like real people to me. I loved the realistic diversity and natural-sounding dialogue. I also appreciated that it wasn't overly graphic and gory despite the subject matter. I'm usually not much of a fan of short novels because if I get into the characters and story, I naturally want more, but I actually liked the length of this book. It was a fun, short read. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five was that it wasn't perfect. It left me with a couple questions I thought should have been answered, but it's still a very enjoyable book anyway. I don't know if this is the beginning of a series or not, but it seems like it could be and if it is, I would definitely want to continue reading them. One more thing...Another review mentioned the cover art...To be honest, I didn't have the highest expectations due to the cover art, but the author's writing skill is, frankly, significantly better. I really don't want to be criticizing someone's art, but I wanted to mention it because you should definitely not judge this book by its cover.

The cover almost put me completely off this book, but the blurb drew me in. Some say the level of diversity in the story felt forced, but to me it didn't. I've lived in trailer parks before, and even in places like Oklahoma and Texas, there seems to be a greater level of ethnic and other variety among the citizens. Trailer parks are the great crossroads of the disenfranchised and overlooked. The characters are well-written and felt authentic. The introduction of supernatural powers was done in such a way that it didn't overwhelm the rest of the story. I would enjoy reading more of the adventures of the Monster Patrol.

Westwood Monster Patrol is very well written and a wonderful read for adults and adolescents alike. I especially enjoyed how relatable the 5 children are with each otherand how I get to glimpse into the very real and very dramatic lives and minds of teens. This is the kind of book I wish I had read when I was younger.

A fantastic and engaging read! The author is really understands the target age group, and it is SO refreshing to have such a diverse group of kids leading a story in this genre. It really reflected the reality of what teen groups look like, and I loved it! I highly recommend this book and look forward to more work from this author!
