The Steele Secrets Series Box Set by Andi Cumbo-Floyd Review
This series is not just for Young Adults!Andi uses her characters to embroider an historical tapestry of stories. Each thread of character connects to another, whether the characters want to admit that connection or not... much like in real life - we are all connected and should stop acting like we aren't. The historical scope of compassion portrayed in these novels is enlightening and inspiring. I hope people of all ages, colours, and backgrounds will read them and carry away a better understanding of humanity and what roles we can, and do, play in each other's lives.
I read all three books and even though I knew there as going to be a similar ending I couldn't stop.. I would like to read more. Racism is a sad but real thing. These stories will open your eyes
This is such a great read. I didn't want to put it down. Keeps your interest and gave me a another way to look at race.
If you're thinking of skipping this book series because a) it's YA and b) there are ghosts, I'd ask you to strongly reconsider. As a reader who does not prioritize books with either of those distinctions, let me tell you: these three stories are MUST-READ.Mary Steele and her friends are likable characters with strong convictions and serious challenges to their mission to bring justice and understanding to their community. Reading these stories opened my eyes to historical atrocities I wasn't aware of. And yet I never felt metaphorically bludgeoned by the author's message. Cumbo-Floyd weaves stories that are both captivating and challenging. I couldn't help but root for Mary and her friends while also mourning the injustices inflicted on people of color.I read each of these books separately and am thrilled by the offering of a boxed set! Reading them one after the other would further immerse the reader in the Steele Secrets world. Well worth the price!
3.5 stars. I have mixed feelings about this book, it reads like a middle school book, not in writting, in the story itself. I think it would be a great read for that age group. My mixed feelings is in the topic. I know that there is still racism in the world today, everyone does. We keep separating ourselves, even now, black and white. Maybe its how I was raised or where I grew up, I'm not sure but, I don't think of my black friends and neighbors as black friends or black neighbors. I simply think of them as friends or neighbors. I don't look at the color of their skin. This book gives you more of a look at some of the uglier sides of being a slave. Things left out of school books. It gives you a glimpse of today's racism as well. All in all this is a good read. Just more for middle grade kids or even younger high school readers.
