Sing to It: Stories by Amy Hempel

Read Online and Download Sing to It: Stories by Amy Hempel. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/FAULKNER AWARD ONE OF TIME’S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR ONE OF NPR’S BEST BOOKS OF 2019 From legendary writer Amy Hempel, one of the most celebrated and original voices in American short fiction: an astounding collection of fifteen stories that are “riveting in precision” (The Atlantic) and “scintillating as the blade of a knife” (The Wall Street Journal). Amy Hempel is a master of the short story. A multiple award winner, Hempel is beloved and highly regarded among writers, reviewers, and readers of contemporary fiction. These fifteen exquisitely honed stories reveal Hempel at her most compassionate and spirited, as she introduces characters, lonely and adrift, searching for connection. In “A Full-Service Shelter,” a volunteer at a dog shelter tirelessly, devotedly cares for dogs on a list to be euthanized. In “Greed,” a spurned wife examines her husband’s affair with a glamorous, older married woman. And in “Cloudland,” the longest story in the collection, a woman reckons with the choice she made as a teenager to give up her newborn infant. Quietly dazzling, these stories are replete with moments of revelation and transcendence and with Hempel’s singular, startling, inimitable sentences. Ravishing, heartbreaking, and powerfully concise, Sing to It is an “exquisite collection” (The Wall Street Journal) and a “quiet masterpiece by a true American original” (NPR).

Sing to It: Stories by Amy Hempel Review

I was seduced into buying this book by an article in the April 1st New Yorker magazine. The article, ESCAPE VELOCITY, was written by James Wood and was essentially a review of this book and a look at the author's overall body of work. The review was well written, compelling, and memorable, three attributes that the collection being reviewed did not possess. Now granted this is my opinion and like a nose everybody has one, so you may like the stories, And who am I to say such things about a published author? Well, I've been around a long time and I would wager that I have read at least a thousand short stories by authors ranging from Bradbury and Asimov to Hawthorne and Poe on through John O'Hara (my favorite) and Hemingway and up to Joyce Carol etc. Every year my middle son buys me the latest America's Best Short Stories...oh, I forgot Tolstoy and Chekov and Pushkin when I was studying Russian. So, I love the art form. What it seems we have in this collection are fragments that an author might write down as the basis for a story to be completed later, but having failed to have her muse give her the details to flesh out the story, she decides to publish the fragments and because of her reputation, her publisher publishes them.Save yourself some money. Find a copy of the New Yorker for April 1 and read the review. It is much better than the book. You want a good story? Read a GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND by Flannery O'Conner or WHERE ARE YOU GOING? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN by Joyce Carol Oates. Or La Carta de Dios.

This was a beautiful, sparingly rendered collection of 15 short stories that varied in length from a few paragraphs to a novella. Most lacked a traditional narrative and dropped you into the middle of something. For me, figuring out that something meant rereading some of the stories a few times to move past what was being said to try to understand the significance of what was left out. I liked the challenge and often felt like I was reading good poetry. At their best, what emerged for me from stories like "Sing To It," "The Chicane," "Greed," "A Full-Service Shelter," and "Cloudland" we're a few sharp moments focused by reflections on mortality from vulnerable characters. While admittedly a heavy undertaking and not the most uplifting subject matter, the sparse, finely honed writing easily puts this in my top three best books I've read so far in 2019.

I couldn’t put this collection down. The author’s unusual skill at composing the terse, conversational sentence is quite astounding. More than once I stopped and reread a sentence just for the pure pleasure of hearing the turn of phrase.

The rightful review of this beautiful book by Amy Hempel, I could not write; James Wood of The New Yorker magazine dit it for me in the April 1 issue. His sensitive and comprehensive analysis ends thus: "We flinch from the truth, we take up convenient and fantastical fictive embroidery to avoid its dangers. But we also write stories to enable us to survive the truth, to sing to it and of it. The secret is in the quality of the song."

Lovely collection. I listened to this on a long run. Be sure you’re running one of your frequent routes because you will become lost in this book.
