Duty of Care: An Executive's Guide for Corporate Boards in the Digital Era by Alizabeth Calder Review

Duty of Care bridges the critical gap in preparedness and readiness of board directors and leaders with respect to their digital knowledge and technology. It is not smart to assume preparedness even at the upper echelons of corporations and boards. Finally, here is a book aimed at board members, leaders, and top executives that underlines their need for adequate risk management and education. Anyone who follows the news is painfully aware of the dangerous consequences when companies are not equipped with the decision making and information-enabled skills to face an unexpected crisis. Alizabeth Calder, while sympathetic to the time constraints of the board and management, makes a case that boosts the organization’s need to make adequate investments in technology, upskill leaders and managers in digital transformation, and ultimately to protect from bad mistakes. Simply put, companies can’t afford not to be up-to-speed on current issues, cybersecurity threats, and other risks to corporate safety. Calder’s excellent book provides numerous examples of companies doing things right but also some who are not. This new book is a must-read for those senior level executives with board and fiduciary responsibility. I highly recommend this as a guide for risk and performance management in the era of digital transformation.

Most people assume that corporate boards include directors who understand digital technology. Sadly, this is a false assumption. The scary truth is that only a handful of corporate directors sitting on boards genuinely understand digital technology and its overwhelming impact on modern society. To put it bluntly, their collective lack of knowledge is both dangerous and irresponsible.Alizabeth Calder's excellent new book tackles the problem head on, and offers sound advice for corporations and their executive leadership teams. Her book includes numerous case studies revealing the right ways and the wrong ways of handling key decision-making processes about technology at the topmost levels of the 21st century enterprise. On one hand, you will be appalled by the ignorance of many boards. On the other hand, you will be happy to read about the companies who are "getting it right" and making decisions based on knowledge, rather than on gut instincts. We live in a data-driven global economy, and it's time for corporate boards to catch up with the realities of life in the digital age."Duty of Care" addresses an absolutely critical issue confronting virtually every large business organization. I recommend it highly. This book should be required reading for all senior executives and board directors at every company.

It’s got to be hard to write a book with this level and quality of research. But it’s got to be harder to for many leaders to read this and realize there is so much to think about in this era of everything digital. This is one of the most prescriptive compilations I’ve read in a while and a must read if you are on a Board or aspire to be on one.
