The Next to Last Mistake by Amalie Jahn Review

Amalie Jahn has such a knack for creating authentic and relatable characters. And she’s never been afraid to tackle challenging subjects. She has succeeded once again with Tess Goodwin and Next to Last Mistake. We all can identify with the challenges of feeling like an outsider. The author uses a move from a Midwest farm to an east coast military base to place her main character in a new and very unfamiliar situation. As a result of this move, Tess is brought face-to-face with issues she never realized existed.I hate giving away plot lines in a review, so will simply say that the story told will tug at your heart, make you think, and perhaps help you to better understand the issues behind some of the headlines in our country’s news. It’s a YA book, so there are times plot lines are tied up a little neatly. But all in all it’s a story that applies to all of us in one way or another. I highly recommend The Next to Last Mistake!

This book follows Tess through one school year full of change. When her father re-enlists in the military, this Iowa farm girl has to leave her best friend and neighbor, Zander, behind, and adjust to her new life on a military base in North Carolina. Outside her familiar surroundings, she's forced to put herself out there--and with the help of her peer mentor, Leonetta, she forms bonds with new friends. The Next to Last Mistake is a well-written and engaging YA novel that tackles many timely topics, demonstrates affirming friendships, and holds your interest through to the end. Recommend.

Amalia Jahn has delivered wonderful tales about time travel and super powers, but this book “The Next To Last Mistake “ makes a mark like no other. The narrator Tess has such a vulnerable yet strong personality from the beginning, she takes the reader along on a journey of self-discovery. The characters surrounding her are ones you would want to have back in high school. There is a point where you would wish Tess could click her heels and “go home” but true life doesn’t always play out that way. It’s always more complicated and Amalia Jahn doesn’t take the easy way out.

I read this book in record time while riding a wave of emotion and remembrance. As a military child, I related to these characters from beginning to end. Memories of the heartache of being uprooted from friendships, forming new bonds so strong that they last a lifetime, trying to disconnect because you know you’re moving on, growing where you’re planted, helping Dad pack his rucksack and duffel bag, the smell of the starched BDUs, the shoe polish while shining his boots and the wanderlust that never leaves you once you’ve tasted the military life. Amalie brought all of things rushing back with the accuracy of every military child. Thank you Amalie.

This story of Tess, as she navigates changes in her life, friendships, and her overall understanding of the world is heartfelt and touching. I loved seeing her grow and change as a friend, and as a person. The story moves along at a great pace and I am so glad to have had the opportunity to read a book that left me feeling that with good friends, who value you simply for who you are, you can get through any challenges that life throws your way. Again, an amazing job from Amalie Jahn!
