TIBCO Spotfire: A Comprehensive Primer: Building enterprise-grade data analytics and visualization solutions, 2nd Edition by Andrew Berridge Review
Content is based on Spotfire V10. Using it with V7 is not a deal breaker. Just leaves you scrambling to find the corresponding way of doing things. My one BIG beef with the book is that the data sets are not embedded at the publishers website. Instead the author sends you searching all over the web for the data. Some of the data takes a lot of digging to track down. Other data sets require you to log into sites that you might otherwise avoid. This is where the publishing company -- Packt -- is really falling down on the job and why the book only earned 3 stars. I bought the book to learn -- not to surf the web.UPDATE: I have since learned that V1 of the book is based on Spotfire V6.5 AND there are full data downloads located at "insidespotfire", so if you're just starting out, you might want to pick up the first version of the book.
I am not necessarily an "advanced" Spotfire user; however, I'm well beyond the beginner's phase. The "HELP" within Spotfire and the online Spotfire User's Manual are so incredibly detailed that searching for guidance on a specific issue inevitably gets me a truckload of information that is really time-consuming and arduous to sift through.I love having a hard copy book in my hands where I can open to a well-ordered, robust Index to find the thing I'm looking for, flip to that specific page, and see exactly what I needed to know. If the book is designed as a handy reference guide, the author(s) will have done two things. First, they will have tried to include something to address virtually any question. Second, they will have arranged it so that similar or somewhat connected topics are grouped together.What I wanted from this book was a reference guide like that. This book is not that. It is much more a step-by-step primer that takes you from the most fundamental things on to more advanced topics. And ... here's the problem ... if they haven't included a particular thing you're trying to accomplish in their workflow, you won't find anything worthwhile in the book. That's been my experience (over and over and over) thus far.Lastly, I find it really annoying that, every time the authors reach a point where the reader could use some in-depth instruction (or examples), they've provided links to all kinds of websites that go into that detail for you. Good grief. I could have done that myself with a quick internet search. I don't need to waste my time picking up a book, going to the index, flipping to a page, and then finding a website link that I need to copy and enter into my browser.If you're learning Spotfire, I think this is an excellent book. If you're looking for a reference guide, this is not it.
For those who is quick in discovering major software functionalities reading of this book will consume more time than just exploring. Spotfire standard functionality is very easy to grasp. The advanced functionalities are not covered in details in this book.
Well organized, well written. Although there are tons of training videos, forums, etc., I like "a book"...
This book is a great resource and has cleared up a tonne of stuff for me that isn’t available or explained very well online. Highly recommended
