State of Health: Pleasure and Politics in Venezuelan Health Care under Chávez by Amy Cooper

Read Online and Download State of Health: Pleasure and Politics in Venezuelan Health Care under Chávez by Amy Cooper. State of Health takes readers inside one of the most controversial regimes of the twenty-first century—Venezuela under Hugo Chávez—for a revealing description of how people’s lives changed for the better as the state began reorganizing society. With lively and accessible storytelling, Amy Cooper chronicles the pleasure people experienced accessing government health care and improving their quality of life. From personalized doctor’s visits to therapeutic dance classes, new health care programs provided more than medical services. State of Health offers a unique perspective on the significance of the Bolivarian Revolution for ordinary people, demonstrating how the transformed health system succeeded in exciting people and recognizing historically marginalized Venezuelans as bodies who mattered.

State of Health: Pleasure and Politics in Venezuelan Health Care under Chávez by Amy Cooper Review

This book gives a refreshingly positive look at a health care system that is inclusive for poorer populations (specifically in Venezuela). Usually we read about the negative aspects of the government vs. health care, but this book discusses how the government gave more power to the people in the name of their health care. It was very interesting to read about Dr. Cooper's experiences with the people taking their health into their own hands in Caracas, and how much the Barrio Adentro program benefited them, as well as making connections to the health care system we have here (in the U.S.) and thinking critically about what a system like Barrio Adentro would accomplish here.

Amy Cooper's "State of Health: Pleasure and Politics in Venezuelan Health Care under Chavez" is a great book for anyone interested in Anthropology or biomedicine. The book does many things well, including its use of ethnographic vignettes that places the reader within the community in Venezuela and help shape our understanding of the people. Cooper also has a very optimistic approach where she focuses on the benefits of this system under Chavez. She does a great job at connecting how the local people seek and receive pleasure from their medical system which is medically pluralistic and allows patients to have agency over their own treatment. However, what the book lacks is a perspective from the doctor's point of view. Cooper mainly follows local women, no men, so we do not see much of a male perspective in this book either.Overall, this is a great book if you are looking to inform yourself on the Venezuelan healthcare system under Chavez. This book challenges Western medicinal practices and forces the reader to open up their mind to new perspectives, stories, and practices when it comes to health care.

The Venezuelan health care system has been given a bad image by the press. We have been made to believe that it has always been bad and unproductive. However, Cooper takes the time to give us a different perspective. Because of her work in the country, she got firsthand information about the health care system under Hugo Chávez. She explored the intersectionality of pleasure and medicine to the people of Venezuela and what a properly functioning health care system meant to them. While there has been a change in power in the country, there has also been a drastic change between this current era and back during Chávez’s day. She took the time to explore the reason for these differences.Personally, this book is one of the books that I have read, and I got the opportunity to meet with the author and discuss her experience writing the book. If you’re interested in global health and the converging point between politics and medicine, this is a must-read for you!

Dr Cooper does a really good job taking the reader inside the healthcare system in Venezuela. With the help of vignettes and simplified explanations of complex topics, she makes it easy for readers of all backgrounds to follow a topic that has influenced profoundly the country and creates introspection about the healthcare systems in other countries as well.
